Melbourne Cup Day |
|
On the first Tuesday in
November the ladies of the club invited all
comers to join them in celebrating Cup Day. There
were sweeps, a hat parade, bowls (for the
brave), hoy (for staying in the cool) and
The Mudpickers Cup as well as a delicious
lunch there to be enjoyed.
Bowls was played using the old style bowls
that the club keeps for barefoot bowlers and
after each second end the players advanced
up the rink by one place so that everybody
played in each position in the rink. The
game lasted for 8 ends. The prize was to be
won by the team that scored closest to a
secret number that was sealed in an
envelope. The secret number turned out to be
12 and three rinks were on 10 at the end of
play so we had three winning teams. Thanks
to Pat Farrell for running this event
Hoy was played for scratchies and one lucky
winner scored $20 from her ticket. Raylene
Williams deserves many thanks for calling
the hoy
The hat parade was a hotly contested affair
and showed the creative talents of our
members and the guests. It tested the skills
of Keith Foley to select just one winner.
The Mudpickers Cup was so popular it had to
be run in two divisions each with 5 heats.
The winners of each heat lined up after the
Melbourne Cup to decide the local winners.
Mike Holmes was the very enthusiastic race
caller and with the obligatory caps and
whips he made the event special.
Lunch was lamb, pork and beef roasts
together with a potato bake and salads. Desert was individual trifles in glasses and they received the
tick of approval from those present (if not
from the heart council!) Thanks to the
Churches, Berit, Reggie, Bernice and Kay for
the lunch. Thanks also to Barbecues Galore
for supplying the roaster.
