Last week we said good-bye to a long standing member of the club. Frank Dunstone. Frank hadn't bowled for a few years but he was a regular member of the Friday club and was happy to give of his vast experience to our new bowlers. I know they appreciated his efforts. He will be sadly missed around the green
Hoorah the repairs to number 1 green are completed!. Well done to Pete and his offsider. The green was running at just a fraction over 16 seconds on Saturday afternoon so we can look forward to some great matches on this surface.
There was movement at the club on Monday 3rd May as the equipment needed to repair the under surface of green 1 arrived. Now we await the expert workforce.
The service road is now completed and we have a flat laneway and a driveway up to the clubhouse behind the BBQ area. Many thanks to Ray Prendreigh and his family for this facility and to all those who helped make this happen. It is a much needed upgrade to our facilities.
The club has been successful in being selected as a host for the "Broadband for Seniors" program which is funded by the federal government. This will see two computers and a broadband connection installed at the club for the use of seniors. The computers will be located along the front wall of the pokies room. The details are still to be organised.
The board has budgeted $3300 for ceiling insulation for the dining room and the kitchen. When the government changed its policy relating to insulation we were suddenly at the top of the installers list of clients so the work was done immediately. Can you feel the difference now?
The board has accepted an offer by Ray Prendreigh's family to provide materials for the construction of a driveway for the service entry to the club. Many thanks to Ray and his family.
Late last year the club purchased 100 chairs for the dining room. Current members, past members or their families are invited to sponsor a chair for $75. There will be a small plaque on the back of the chair to thank the sponsor
Today ( Friday 11th February) we farewell a member of the Ladies Club: Ellen Powell. Ellen was only with our club several years but in that time she established herself as a terrific bowler and a great person. Her cheerful face will be sadly missed on the greens at South Townsville.

NQ President May Hinds is presented with the Bendigo Bank Shield by a representative from the Bendigo Bank, Noleen Napoli. All lady bowlers in the north of Queensland thank the Bendigo Bank for its ongoing sponsorship of this prestigious event. There were five divisions contesting the event and NQ won from the Atherton district followed by Mackay in third place, Cairns district in fourth place and Far North Queensland in fifth spot.
The home team of Carole Broadbent skip, Lyn Pool third, Kay Lehmann second and Michelle Sumpton lead, today ( Wednesday 7th July) won the Standard Cup for the second year running. The team finished on top of their pool with 5.5 wins and, as last year, they faced Jubilee ( also on 5.5 wins) in the final. It was a hard fought match with South Townsville prevailing 26-23 after 25 ends. Congratulations to the team and well done to all of the people who worked so hard to make the tournament such a magnificent success

Beres O'Keefe is presented with her veteran's badge by President Pat

Congratulations Beres
On Monday afternoon 21st June at 3pm the event to celebrate 50 years of touring by the NQ Tour Group began This was the culmination of months of hard work by the organising committee and their work paid off hansomely There were photos and more photos and memorabilia and lots of old friends to catch up with and great food. The evening was admirably chaired by Kevin O'Shea and the variety of speakers reminded the guests of the interesting happenings that had occurred over the years. To see the photos from this function follow this link
On Saturday afternoon about 1pm there was action aplenty at the clubhouse. Nearly 100 people were seated in the dining room tearing up tickets in preparation for the biannual cent sale. At 1.30pm the fun began. Runners carrying prizes and buckets collected tickets from the participants and the giant raffle began. There were hundreds of prizes and at 3pm the boss called a halt to enable afternoon tea to be served. After a cuppa and a couple of pieces of home baked slice it was back to the sale. The prizes ranged from home cooking to sewing to knick knaks and fruit and vegies. Of course there were the lucky ones who needed a trailor to carry their prizes home but the majority had to be content with a terrific afternoon out and a good chat with neighbours. Thanks to all club members who donated the prizes and slices. Without your generosity these events are not possible. Many thanks also to the runners who will be feeling a little weary after the function.
It is really terrific to see that the ground work to repair the number one green has started. The whisper is that it will be completed in a week

The tractor is loosening up the surface material which will be removed and replaced. But before that could happen it needed some grunt from the fellas

and then it had to be inspected ..."and that is why I missed that shot last Wednesday week"

But seriously the rest of the club would like to thank those men who rolled up their sleeves on Thursday 13th May to lift the carpet to ensure that the repairs to the green could be made
The South Townsville quintet of Pat Farrell, Berit Karlin, Elaine Murdoch, Lee Church and Kay Lehmann won the annual Magpie 5's at Thuringowa on Thursday 6th May. This competition consists of pairs and triples in the morning and rinks and singles in the afternoon. Berit and Kay narrowly won the pairs after being 14 all with one end remaining, whilst Lee, Elaine and Pat had a draw in the triples. Both the rink and the singles had a win in the afternoon. Well done ladies
On the Anzac Day holiday there was a challenge issued at the club. The men against the ladies. The challenge was accepted with alacrity and a wonderful afternoon was had by all. Suffice to say the men's ego was left intact...for the time being. You can view the photos by going to the gallery and then to social days.
A special thanks to the organisers of the event. More please
On Sunday 16th May, the Australian Meat Industry will conduct its well known sausage sizzle competition in the BBQ area at our club. Butchers from all over the north will be vying for the "best sausage" title in various categories. As there are expected to be crowds tasting the goodies we will take advantage of this by operating a secondhand stall and a plant stall. This day promises to be a big day for the club
The club will be holding a monster Cent Sale on 22nd May commencing at 1.30pm. These cent sales always have many terrific prizes and it provides you with hours of entertaining frustration as you see the prizes you would like disappearing to another person. The afternoon commences at 1.30pm but you will need a good half hour to organise your tickets. See you there about 12.45pm
Russell Sumpton has come through a rigorous selection period to be named in the NQ Men's District Team to compete at Coolum later in the year. Russell joins Carole Broadbent (who is a skip in the Ladies Team) and May Hinds (who is the NQ Ladies President) as the South Townsville Representatives in these teams. Congratulations and good bowls in the DEEP SOUTH
This week we helped two stalwart couples at the club celebrate milestones. Marie and Vic Venn posted 62 years of marriage while Joan and Ray Carter have mustered a mere 58 years. Congratulation to both couples.
